Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease characterized by damage to the optic nerve, often associated with elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). It is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, typically developing without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. The condition can manifest in various forms, such as open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma, each requiring specific management strategies to prevent vision loss.

Several factors increase the likelihood of developing glaucoma, including age, family history, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, individuals with high myopia or a history of eye injuries are at a heightened risk. Ethnic background also plays a role; for example, African Americans and Hispanics have a higher prevalence of glaucoma compared to Caucasians.

In its initial stages, glaucoma may present no symptoms, which makes regular eye exams crucial for early detection. As the disease progresses, patients may experience peripheral vision loss, often described as 'tunnel vision,' and in advanced stages, central vision may also deteriorate. Some forms, like acute angle-closure glaucoma, can present with sudden symptoms including severe eye pain, headache, nausea, and blurred vision, requiring immediate medical attention.

Glaucoma is primarily caused by increased intraocular pressure (IOP), which can result from a buildup of fluid in the eye due to poor drainage. This condition may also arise from other factors such as age, family history, certain medical conditions (like diabetes), and previous eye injuries or surgeries. In some cases, glaucoma can develop without any identifiable reason, referred to as primary open-angle glaucoma. Secondary glaucoma can result from specific conditions such as inflammation, eye trauma, or the use of certain medications like corticosteroids.

Diagnosis of glaucoma typically involves comprehensive eye examinations, including measurements of intraocular pressure, assessment of the optic nerve, and visual field tests. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) may also be utilized to obtain detailed images of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer. Early detection is critical, as timely intervention can mitigate further damage and preserve vision.

The mainstay of glaucoma treatment involves lowering intraocular pressure to prevent damage to the optic nerve. This can be achieved through prescription eye drops that either reduce fluid production or increase drainage. In cases where medication is insufficient, laser therapy or surgical procedures may be employed to improve drainage or create a new channel for fluid to exit the eye. Regular monitoring and adjustments in treatment are crucial to managing this progressive condition effectively.

Although there is no definitive method to prevent glaucoma, regular eye examinations are essential for early detection, especially for high-risk individuals. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including managing systemic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, can also reduce risk factors. For individuals diagnosed with glaucoma, adhering to prescribed treatment regimens and regular follow-up appointments can help manage the condition and minimize the risk of vision loss.
